About Balaji Katlai

Education & qualifications

Balaji holds a CPA designation and has completed numerous specialised tax courses, including CPA Canada’s In-Residence Tax Practitioners course. He earned a PhD in Physics from McGill University, where he also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Cosmology and Particle Physics. In addition to his tax and business advisory work, Balaji has received formal training in Six Sigma methodologies and holds certifications in this field.

Balaji is a member with CPA Ontario and is actively involved in professional development within the accounting industry. He serves as a course instructor for CPA Alberta and a facilitator for CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax Program. His academic and professional accomplishments include being named class valedictorian during his CPA studies.

Experience

With over a decade of experience, Balaji has advised clients on corporate tax and business tax incentives, including structuring employee equity schemes. His knowledge extends to local business sales, helping businesses transition to the next generation, and planning tax-efficient strategies for capital extraction. He has worked with both local and international clients, gaining expertise in navigating complex Canadian tax regulations and incentives. Balaji also teaches advanced tax courses and serves as a facilitator for CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax Program, providing in-person guidance to tax professionals.

Balaji is passionate about tax and tax education, regularly contributing to the Canadian Tax Foundation and Thomson Reuters on topical tax issues, with some of his articles cited in PITA for specific legislation. He has presented at regional tax conferences hosted by the Canadian Tax Foundation and other tax forums. As an instructor, Balaji teaches select courses for CPA Alberta and the CPA In-Depth Tax Program, mentoring the next generation of tax professionals. Balaji also has rich experience in business tax incentives, including SR&ED, OIDTMC, Quebec’s E-business and multimedia tax credits, and inbound tax planning for technology companies.

Before entering corporate tax, Balaji trained as a physicist, specialising in neutrino physics and early Universe cosmology. He worked primarily in Europe before moving to Montréal, Canada, where he authored 28 peer-reviewed papers, many published in journals by The American Physical Society. His work is also archived at SLAC, Stanford.

Balaji often writes for the Canadian Tax Foundation and Thomson Reuters on tax issues.
